OCR: Luo Guan-zhong and His Romance of the Three Kingdoms The period of the Three kingdoms followed the overthrow of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The country was suffering from the tremendous turmoil of war among the warlords, many of whom were brilliant statesmen, military commanders, and writers. Their stories went into historical records and also spread among the masses. These stories, however, were not complete until the coming-out of the work of Luo Guan-zhong, the Ming novelist, who learned from operas and folk stories and compiled a cycle of stories, known as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The book, 800,000 words in length, was one of the greatest literary classics and was based on the history of the Three Kingdoms. The novel contains a wealth of historical detail on the political and military struggles, and is noted for the many distinctive characters described in it, among them the strategist Zhu-ge Liang, the upright and daring generals Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhao Yun of the Kingdom of Shu, Cao Cao, a cunning statesman and commander of the Kingdom of Wei, Zhou Yu, the shrewd and intelligent chief commander of the Kingdom of Wu
